Boris’s time has expired

- Chandra Roy Bretton

With respect, I totally disagree with Alan Sharpe’s perspective on Partygate scandal and the repercussions that followed (PT, April 21).

If I understood correctly, Mr Sharpe is blaming the left wing politicians, the media and the antiBrexiteers (the Remainers) for the ongoing crisis at No. 10. He seems to be suggesting that the antiBrexiteers are trying to undermine Boris Johnson and his government in revenge. He appears to say the Partygate scandal – with all the other scandals by Boris Johnson and his cronies – should not be a resignation matter.

He used the analogy of a speeding ticket to justify and condone Johnson’s unlawful activities. This analogy is laughable; it seriously questions the intelligence, motive and, yes, common sense too, of the person making the claim.

Mr Sharpe probably is not aware that many Brexiteers want Boris Johnson out too. Notable of them are Steve Baker and David Davis, who were the two leading protagonists in the Brexit debate. They were once Johnson’s buddies, but no longer.

Our system of Government is based on the principle of democracy, honesty, integrity and rule of law. Boris Johnson has shown no respect for this principle.

It seems he lied to Parliament over and over with impunity, because of the Tories’ tribal loyalty to him, but it’s waning and waning fast. Mr Sharpe has asked for the right judgement call. I think the country has made that call.

According to the latest YouGov poll, 65 per cent of the population think Boris Johnson is incompetent and doing a bad job. So, it’s time he turns in the key to No.10.
