Healthy competition for youngsters
In the Rotary series of youth competitions, two students from Stamford High School entered the young artist competition. The topic to be portrayed was “The Colours of Nature”. Anna Smith won the senior class of the local competition, repeating her success in the Rotary regional competition, thus earning her a place in the national finals. Anna said: “While I wanted to portray the beauty of nature, I also wanted to show the human impact that endangers it. Thus, I chose to show half of a colourful coral reef and half the bleached sea floor (made of waste materials and Covid masks). I feel this was an important statement to make and am proud of my outcome.”
In the intermediate class, Olivia Scott was runner-up with her portrayalofbutterflies.Oliviasaid: “My inspiration was the beautiful colours of butterflies, not only do theydescribethebeautyofnature but also show how fragile it is. A man in black and white showed how humans have to coexist with nature but cannot take away its importance and beauty.”
