Popular keeper Benda hints at a Posh return

-

Goalkeeper Steven Benda made Posh fans sit up and take notice by sending a ‘see you again’ message on social media.

The 23 year-old made a strong impression while on loan at Posh from Swansea earlier this year before his season was ended early by a broken finger.

Posh could be chasing two new goalkeepers in the summer following the release of Dai Cornell and the decision to make Christy Pym available for transfer.

That is unless the club are confident untested teenager Will Blackmore will make the step up to first-team level.

The 19 year-old is currently the only goalkeeper on the club’s books, buyt has made just one substitute appearance for the first-team, in the final game of the 2020-21 season at Doncaster Rovers.

Benda topped a recent Peterborough Telegraph poll on which signings they would like Posh to make in the summer. The German goalie is under contract at Swansea until the end of the 2023-24, but he is not likely to feature in their first team next season.

And over the weekend Benda tweeted: ‘Hi, Posh fans. I just want to say thank you for your support this season.

"I felt really appreciated and enjoyed every minute playing for Peterborough.

"I’m sorry that i couldn’t help the team stay in this league, but I know the club will be back stronger. See you again.’

Posh boss Grant McCann was impressed with what little he saw of Benda after returning to the club in late February, but has so far been non-committal on whether or not the ‘keeper is a transfer target.

Wages could be a problem if Posh do decide to make a move for Benda.

He took a big cut just to join Posh on loan in January.

Benda went on to make 11 appearances before suffering a back injury in the FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.

He pulled out of the following game at Huddersfield with an illness and then broke a finger on his first day back in training which ruled him out for the season so returned to South Wales.

Benda has started just eight games for Swansea having joined them from German football in 2017.
