A stark reminder of struggling in the Championship

- MATCH FACTS

game showed how poorly equipped for the Championship Posh would be in the unilikely event they sneaked up this season.

League One leaders Sheffield Wednesday would win noawardsforattractivefoootball or levels of entertainment.

Indeed take the mercurial Barry Bannon out of their side and they would be a gruesome watch. No-one surely enjoys watching big blokes hoof the ball from one end of the pitch to the other.

But they are Championship

bound after 21 third tier games without defeat and they’ll probably do okay at the higher level.

Worryingly they barely had to break sweat to see off a Posh side who defended well throughout, passed prettily in an encouraging first 45 minutes, but who failed to generate a shot on target or force a corner in the entire game.

In other words it was like watching their struggles against physically superior athletes at Championship level last season.

Posh were the better side in the first half until they got anywhere near the home penalty area where they floundered against the meanest defence in the division.

Despite less possession Wednesday still looked the more likely to score thanks to their set-piece prowess with Josh Windass hitting the crossbar from a 26th-minute corner.

But the home side bombarded Posh for the opening 15 minutes of the second half and, after goalkeeper Will Norris had kept out a close range header from Aden Flint, they struck, albeit fortuitously, as Nathan Thompson’s attempt to block a cross from Jaden Brown turned into a deflected own goal.

Posh should have equalised eight minutes later when Harrison Burrows sent Kwame Poku scuttling clear, but he dithered disappointThis

ingly and was tackled.

And that was pretty much that as the Owls cruised to a 22nd win of the season.

The gap between the best and Posh remains large.

Goal – Thompson (og, 61). Posh caution – Edwards. Attendance: 26,984 (approx 1,800 Posh).
