There’s clearly plenty of fight left in Fergie’s men

-

Pleasingly Posh don’t appear ready to chuck in the play-off towel just yet.

They weren’t at their best in terms of fluent football against a dogged Shrewsbury team, but the attitude, commitment and will to win were rewarded with a dramatic late winning goal.

Frankie Kent was the match-winner with a neat close range 87th minute header after substitute Kabongo Tshimanga had flicked on a Joe Ward setpiece.

Ward had also played a key role in the opening Posh goal as Jonson Clarke-Harris scored with a well-placed header from the wide man’s cross, again from a free kick.

That lead lasted four minutes as the visitors claimed an equaliser from another set-play, one expertly finished by central defender Tom Flanagan.

There are some who believe Darren Ferguson’s return hasn’t sparked that much improvement, but scoring the first half of the season.

Posh played neatly at times in the first period and should have been ahead at the interval.

Jack Taylor headed over in the sixth minute from a Ward cross and the winger hit a left-foot shot straight at Shrews ‘keeper Marko Marosi following an Ephron Mason-Clark centre.

Ward also landed a corner on the top of the crossbar, but after a bright 30 minutes Posh became rather ragged.

In the second-half playoff hunting Shrewsbury seemed to realise they also needed to win and became more of an attacking force, but after Matthew Pennington lashed a decent chance over the bar, they didn’t trouble Posh ‘keeper Will Norris until Jordan Shipley’s late long range effort which required a full length diving save.

The visitors also wanted a penalty after Norris clashed with Chey Dunkley in the 90th minute, but halfhearted protests were waved away.
