We need some concrete info about conference centre plan

- Thornton on Thursday Written by Nigel Thornton

The announcement of plans for a huge conference centre with flats and rooftop bar on the site of the old Woolies building was quite odd.

It was very much a case of “vague news”.

The news was revealed by the local Tories in the newspaper column offered to them (and the other major political parties) by the PT in the run-up to today’s elections.

Details, especially of such a major project, were scarce to say the least.

In fact all we seem to know is that an unnamed developer has submitted a proposal to the city council along with a slick image of how it could look.

It feels ambitious (maybe too ambitious?) and there are certainly more questions than answers. For example where is the car parking that would surely be needed to service such a venue?

A thriving conference centre would be a huge boost for the city, and though I’ve virtually given up hope of any new development in the city being anything than an oblong block of concrete and glass it would have to be an architectural improvement on the existing building - particularly the infamous Woolies wall that backs onto Bourges Boulevard.

But some, er, more concrete information about the plans would be welcome.

THE BEAUTIFUL BANK ACCOUNT

It’s a nerve-wracking end to the season for Posh fans and for me as a Leeds fan - albeit for very different reasons.

Both teams could be in the same division next year and although I don’t want that, it is surely what makes football great –unlike seeing super-rich clubs forming an orderly and very dull queue at the top of the Premier League.

POLITICIAN HEAL THYSELF

Good luck to all the candidates in today’s election for the city council. I hope people turn out and vote although I’m sure it will be a depressingly low turn-out.

It is time all politicians looked at how they can reengage with the public both locally and nationally. An improvement in standards of behaviour would be a good place to start.

HOLIDAY BLUES

I don’t want to get all Victor Meldrew-y on you but I really dislike Bank Holidays. For me, and I suspect for many other people, all it means is you have to do five days’ work in four days!
