Record for wind power
The wind power industry has been given a boost after smashing the record for the amount of British electricity generated for the second time in three months.
As high winds hit the UK, wind- generated electricity for the National Grid hit a peak of 783,886megawatt hours – 13% of the UK’s total power need for the week. December 21 saw an individual daily output of 132,812MWh, around 17% of the UK’s demand, with 10% of the country’s power demand being met by wind provision through the month – up from the previous 8% record set in October.
The figures were yesterday welcomed by green energy industry body Renewable UK.
Deputy Chief Executive Maf Smith said: “In December, we generated more electricity from wind for British homes and businesses than during any other month on record – and we also hit weekly and daily highs. This gives us a great sense of confidence f or t he year ahead.”
