What’s so wrong with independence?

-

SIR, – I find it rather sad that those who voted against Scottish independence regard themselves as “canny Scots” while those who voted for and believe in Scottish independence were told they are “wrong”.

Are people in countries like New Zealand, Iceland and Denmark also “wrong”?

It is also rather unfortunate to see people like myself called “lemmings” by a letter writer in the P&J and regarded as stupid for believing that Scotland could quite readily be a successful country if it was to be an independent state.

Where were these “canny” No voters when successive Westminster governments thought it was a good idea to squander billions of pounds of oil revenues rather than set up a sovereign oil wealth fund for everyone in the UK?

Where were they hiding when Aberdeen, the Oil Capital of Europe, lost their only remaining shipyard in 1991?

Surely Aberdeen should have

“the capacity to build offshore supply and diving support vessels that are regularly seen in Aberdeen harbour?

Hopefully, going forward, Yes voters will not only be heard but, more importantly, listened to with regard to improving the Union, with regard to Scotland's place within the Union.

It would also be good if those in Scotland were regarded as assets to the Union rather than “subsidy junkies”.

Surely millions of Scots have some contribution to make towards the future of the UK. Thomas Peter Ovenstone, Orchard Grove, Peterhead units is the availability of qualified midwives.

This should not be surprising as during her term as health secretary, Nicola Sturgeon instigated cuts in training places for not only general nurses but midwives.

So is the £6million “gift of baby boxes” really to help clear Nicola's conscience?

The first minister was told she had to take personal responsibility for the chaos in Scotland’s hospitals as a result of decisions she made while in the post between 2007 and 2012 – or is it just another sticking plaster solution?

Surely the health and wellbeing of the newborn baby should carry far more importance than “baby boxes” and hence just imagine what this sum of £6million could do in the support of midwifery and saving new lives instead. Jim Bruce, Daviot, Inverurie
