Farmers feel the benefits of on farm forestry

-

The Scottish Government has recently announced forestry targets expected to lead to the creation of 10,00015,000ha of new woodland per year, with attractive grant funding available to assist with the creation of new plantations.

Many landowners are now considering establishing woodland, which can also bring favourable tax benefits in relation to Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax. For farms with mature woodland planted in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, strong prices and demand are providing a welcome diversified income on sales of timber.

Davidson & Robertson (D&R) offer a tailored Forestry and Woodland Management service for woodland/forests ranging from small farm scale woods to large commercial forests.

Gervase Topp from D&R Maud office commented:

“Famers and landowners have a real opportunity to benefit from available grants, tax advantages and current market conditions and should seriously consider how new forestry plantations could work alongside farming. Options for managing existing farm scale woodland, to benefit from biomass and firewood markets should also be explored.”

“The biomass sector in an interesting one at the moment and we are also seeing plenty of demand from investors looking for plantable land. This really is an exciting time for the forestry sector”.

“I would encourage any interested farmer or landowner to call our Maud office on 01771 613717 for a free no obligation consultation with one of our forestry consultants.”
