Brexit talks have only just begun
SIR, – as one of the 62%, and unlike Susan Grant (Press and Journal, June 21), I fully accepted the democratic will of the British people to leave the EU following the recent UK-wide referendum.
Furthermore she makes wild assertions about what will and what will not happen at the conclusion of the protracted and complicated Brexit negotiations – just as the talks get under way.
In particular she suggests that London merchant bankers and financiers will be protected over the interests of Scottish fishing waters.
First, I would remind her that the sure way to ditch the interests of our fishermen would have been to vote for the SNP who stated that they would sign up to full EU membership which requires complete compliance with their current CFP.
Ms Grant also appears to be unaware that the banking sector is also extremely important to Edinburgh and Glasgow earning substantial revenues (billions) for Scotland and employs many thousands of highly paid employees.
Rather than second-guess what may or may not transpire with the Brexit negotiations we should all accept we are where we are and trust our democratic process to get the best deal for Britain with the EU focusing on jobs – not forgetting that any downsides of leaving should be more than offset with new untrammelled global trade deals currently unavailable as a member of the single market.
