Student sent offensive texts

-

Milligan, 21, was convicted in July after admitting abusing and assaulting his former girlfriend Emily Drouet last year. He was sentenced to 180 hours of community service but was spared jail when he appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.

The psychology student was later thrown off his course. Aberdeen University stated that the institution had the power to “apply its discretion” to consider whether or not a student should be readmitted to a course.

The university added: “Alongside academic judgement this would include attention to a student’s conduct, in particular conduct affecting other members of the university community.” Milligan admitted sending Miss Drouet “grossly offensive” and “menacing” messages on March 3 and March 4 last year, and grabbing her by the neck, choking her, pushing her against a desk and slapping her on March 10. Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard that in one message, the 21-yearold called Miss Drouet “the worst person in Aberdeen”.

He also shouted abuse at Miss Drouet in Aberdeen University’s Hillhead Halls, on two occasions between March 3 and March 10. A week later, the young law student was found dead. The couple started dating in late 2015, but their relationship broke down at the start of last year. They had separated shortly before her death. Miss Drouet’s parents, Germain and Fiona, attended the court hearing. Following the case, her distraught mother said: “Angus Milligan showed no mercy to our daughter. We hope that his sentence reflects the devastating consequences of his actions.”
