Dairy farm throwing doors open to members of public
A dairy farm will throw open its doors to the public next month.
Roddy and Angela Catto will show school children and members of the public what life on Hillhead of Muirton Farm at Whitecairns, near Dyce, is like on June 15 and 16.
Visitors will get tours, learn about the work carried out, find out about the local produce on offer in Aberdeenshire and see sheepdog demonstrations.
Visitors will also get the chance to see a range of animals, including beef and dairy cows, calves, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry, as well as the opportunity to taste locally produced foods and view cookery demonstrations by Sandy Greig from Two Fat Laddies.
Mr Catto said: “We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming local schools to Hillhead of Muirton on Friday, June 16 and we open to the public the day after.
“We have pulled together an actionpacked, informative and entertaining event.
“We are keen that people hear the fantastic story we have about the quality and provenance of local produce and introduce them to the vast array of local businesses who produce food and drink on our doorstep.”
The two-day event had been organised in conjunction with rural education charity the Royal Northern Countryside Initiative.
Mr Catto added: “We want the public, and especially children, to learn more about potential careers in agriculture.
“You don’t need to be a farmer and stuck at the back end of a cow to have a career in our industry.”
The open day for school children runs from 10am to 2pm on Friday June 15, and the public open day will run from 10am to 4pm the next day.
