Season’s best throw could clinch Law GB spot
Discus thrower Kirsty Law (Inverness Harriers) is poised to be added to the Great Britain team for next month’s European championships in Berlin after throwing a season’s best of 56.37 metres at an international meeting in Portugal.
The Loughboroughbased athlete, who has been Scottish champion a record 10 times, just missed the qualifying standard when finishing second in the British championships with a throw of 54.63m at Birmingham earlier in the month.
However, Law hit the mark on the first day of the Portuguese competition, clearing 56.31m, then improved by a further six centimetres on day two.
Now she has exceeded the required mark of 56m by producing her two best throws for four years and can look forward to be included in the squad for Germany.
Law said: “I feel like I have bigger throws to come. The end of the qualifying is next weekend so hopefully I’ll be informed then if I am officially selected.
“The criteria was to achieve one standard of 56m and place in the top two at the British champs so I am happy I have done that. Portugal was a high standard so I am happy to have performed under pressure to place in the top two. I had a big warm-up so I new I was on for a big throw if I just trusted my technique and executed.
“I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks. I will be heading back to Loughborough and my plan is to get some quality training in with my coach before the Europeans.”
Aberdeen AAC’s Zoey Clark, who also hopes to be going to Berlin in the 4x400m relay helped Great Britain finish fifth in that event at the World Athletics Cup at the London stadium.
The Commonwealth Games athlete ran the first leg for the GB quartet, who recorded a time of 3min 26.48sec.
