‘Hysteria’ art performance night is success
An innovative performance night has attracted support after being launched by two women in Aberdeen.
Mae Diansangu and Hanna Louise, who both live in the city, created Hysteria Aberdeen – a monthly event designed to highlight the talent of women and non-binary people.
A night of poetry, music and spoken word came to life at their launch event in March on International Women’s Day.
The group then found out last month that they had been offered a regular slot at Spin, an arts venue and bar in Aberdeen.
Miss Louise said: “At the end of last year, we had the idea that we wanted to start up a collective for women and non-binary artists, ideally with a space where people could come and create in a supportive and uninhibited environment.
“The first performance on June 26 went really well. We had way more people than expected – the place was totally packed. Performers ranged in age from teenagers to women in their fifties doing different performance styles.
“The great.”
In their support for women’s rights, Miss Louise and Ms Diansangu offered free entry, and asked attendees to bring along sanitary products to donate to local services.
They said they had been encouraged by the increasingly tolerant and open society within the Granite City.
Miss Louise added: “In the past couple of years Aberdeen’s creative scene has blossomed. There’s so feedback was
“Things are changing for the better and it’s exciting”
much going on right now – performance nights, creative meet-ups, art sessions – all over the city.
“It used to just be open mics in pubs dominated by men. Things are changing for the better and it’s exciting to be a part of that.”
The next event is on Thursday July 26 at 7.30pm at Spin Aberdeen. All are welcome to attend, and all women and nonbinary artists encouraged to perform.
