Rutherford not going to Europeans
Greg Rutherford confirmed he will not defend his European long jump title in Berlin next month after competing at the London Stadium for the final time.
The 31-year-old will retire at the end of the season and held slim hopes of making it to Germany in two weeks.
He set himself a target of eight metres on Sunday, but managed just 7.55m in his only legal jump at the Anniversary Games.
Rutherford, the 2012 Olympic champion, has won the last two European titles, but ruled out biding for a hat-trick this year, saying: “I am not prepared to go as a tourist, I want to win medals. There is not a hope of me getting through three days of jumping.”
