Hall of Fame will open its doors to Gothenburg Great

- BY JAMIE DURENT

Peter Weir has been named as the third 2018 inductee into the AFC Hall of Fame.

Signed twice by Sir Alex Ferguson, Weir won eight trophies with the Dons and is a Gothenburg Great, having won the 1983 Cup-Winners’ Cup against Real Madrid.

Weir joined the Dons in 1981 from St Mirren and scored twice in their win over Ipswich Town in the Uefa Cup, which knocked out Bobby Robson’s cup holders. He made 237 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring 38 goals, before spells at Leicester City, St Mirren and Ayr United.

He was born in Paisley and played for Neilston Juniors before Ferguson signed him in 1978. The legendary boss brought him to Pittodrie three years later and Weir won two Scottish league titles in the red shirt, as well as four Scottish Cups, the Cup Winners’ Cup and European Supercup. He won six caps for Scotland.

Weir said: “It was a dream playing for your local side, St Mirren, then getting a big move to a club you had supported. It was great to have won many honours with Aberdeen and also being capped by Jock Stein.

“Europe was special, a different atmosphere, tactics, playing against good technical players, players that you did not know. The fans seemed to be more vocal in the midweek European games under the floodlights. Fergie and Archie (Knox)’s tactics were usually spot on and he had dossiers on the opposition.

“Everyone talks about the Ipswich game because they were a brilliant side and I scored twice at Pittodrie but I enjoyed all European games.”

Weir follows Bobby Clark and Eoin Jess into the Hall of Fame as part of the 2018 class. The 2018 AFC Hall of Fame will take place in the Marcliffe Hotel, Aberdeen, on November 1.
