Nicolson frustrated by failure to take chances

-

Strathspey manager Gordon Nicolson is frustrated his side missed an opportunity to break their Scottish Cup duck as they lost 2-0 to Coldstream.

For the fifth year in succession Thistle exited the competition at the first hurdle.

Strathspey created promising openings but could not find the back of the net.

The East of Scotland League side will now play Brora in the second round of the cup.

Nicolson said: “I am bitterly disappointed and feel that a good chance has passed us by.

“We created the better chances in the game and probably had enough chances to win a couple of games.

“Our goalkeeper Michael MacCallum never had much to do, apart from making a great save near the end of the game.”

Coldstream broke the deadlock midway through the first half when Stuart Briggs got a foot to a cross from the left wing and the ball spun into the net at Thistle’s near post.

The best chance Strathspey created in the opening period saw Scott Lisle blast a halfvolley from close range over the bar.

After the break the hosts came close to getting back on level terms when a shot from Gavin Hay was saved by Coldstream keeper Mark Walters.

Lisle was first to the rebound, but could only direct his effort wide.

The Jags were quickly made to pay for their profligacy. Coldstream doubled their lead and secured the victory with 10 minutes remaining, thanks to a good finish from 12 yards out by Briggs.

Nicolson, whose side host Brora on Saturday, said: “It is a chance wasted, but credit to them.

“They got the win and are into the next round of the cup.”
