Primary children hailed as inspiring example

-

Children at a city primary school have been hailed as an “inspiration” following their innovative efforts to raise money for charity.

After their recent project on Africa, Primary 6 pupils at Hanover Street School in Aberdeen decided to help those living in poverty by making their own chocolate bars and selling them in the school.

The class voted on their three favourite designs – Golden Goodness, Nutella Surprise and Unicat – before melting the chocolate, designing the wrapping paper and pricing the finished bars at £1 each.

The project raised £230 for Mary’s Meals, which provides food

to some of the world’s poorest children every day.

The charity’s Wendy Buchan received a cheque from the class.

The school was earlier this year named UK champion in the Better Energy Awards for its commitment to environmental protection.

It has also been instrumental in influencing Aberdeen City Council’s decision to phase out plastic straws in public buildings.

Class teacher Catherine Sabbagh said: “It was a great learning experience for the children, to make them aware of the poverty faced in Africa and how we can help,.”

She added: “The class really are an inspiration.”

A spokesman for Mary’s Meals said: “The way in which the Hanover Street children have applied themselves, and the use of transferable skills as part of the project, is to be commended.”
