Award: Appetite MD swallows top rivals to scoop national technology prize

A north-east woman has been named Leader of the Year in recognitio­n of her commitment to overcoming adversity and inspiring other women into the technology sector.

Sheryl Newman, managing director of Aberdeen-based Appetite for Business, received the national accolade at the Scottish Women in Technology (SWiT) Awards this week.

The result was announced in front of more than 400 guests, including some of the biggest names in tech, at a black-tie event held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow.

It brought together women from start-ups, multi-million pound businesses and academia.

Ms Newman – the sole finalist based in the north of Scotland – beat off competitio­n from rivals at Accenture, Amazon, CodeClan, Getronics and JP Morgan to clinch the top category prize. It is the second consecutiv­e year that an Aberdeen businesswo­man has received gong following PCL Group chief executive Jeannette Forbes’ win last year.

Sterling fell 0.48% against the US dollar to 1.282, and was down 0.25% versus the euro at 1.127, despite easing of tension surroundin­g Theresa May’s leadership.

The FTSE 100 managed to climb back above the 7,000-point mark but lagged behind its European counterpar­ts.

The blue-chip index closed 41.12 points, or 0.59%, higher at 7,004.1.

The German Dax and French Cac climbed 1.03% and 1.6%, respective­ly.

A barrel of Brent crude was trading 1.11% higher at 76.48 US dollars.
