North-east model railway club wins national prize

- BY JAMES WYLLIE

A team of tenacious northeast train enthusiasts has come out on top in a televised nationwide competition.

Aberdeen Model Railway Club was crowned the victor of the 2018 Great Model Railway Challenge on Channel 5 last night.

The group was tasked with designing and building a brand new layout with a time-travel theme in just 24 hours as part of the programme’s grand finale.

Its six members reached the stage after receiving high praise in the heats for Clucas Bay, a creation named after one of their late members.

After lifting the trophy, the group posted on social media: “We had an absolutely brilliant time participating in the show.

“The show taught us a lot, but mostly that teamwork is key, that the hobby is a brilliant hobby – especially the social aspect – and that it is amazing what you can do in 24 hours.”
