Young people to discuss voting rights at debate
Dozens of youngsters from youth organisations in the Highlands are to take part in a mock debate on women’s suffrage – and homework.
Highland MP Drew Hendry will join local Scouts, Guides and Boys’ Brigade groups on Thursday at Millbank Primary School in Nairn to take part in the House of Commons-style debate.
Discussions will be split into two separate topics, with the first dating back to 1918 and debating whether women should have the right to vote, and the second following a polling day vote by the youngsters which will be on the hot topic of home work.
The debate, being organised by 1st Nairn Scout Group, is part of the UK Parliament Week and aims to engage and empower young people from different backgrounds into the world of politics.
Commenting on the local event, Mr Hendry said: “In putting on this event, the organisers really have done a terrific job bringing Parliament to life for our young Scouts, Guides and Boys’ Brigade.
“This year is extra special because it marks the centenary of the Representation of the People Act which saw some women win the right to vote. The lessons of inclusion and respect highlighted by the suffragettes are as relevant today as they were then.
“I hope these mock debates encourage young people to find their own voices and perhaps inspire some to become future political leaders.”
