Staying in would be huge humiliation
SIR, – If there was a Brexit “People’s Vote”, there would have to be three choices: stay in the EU; the May deal; and leave, with no deal.
Staying in would be our biggest humiliation since Suez, made worse as it wasn’t just the Cabinet to blame, but all who voted in 2016.
The May deal is the only coherent plan, tested in the heat of battle with EU negotiators.
It is also much nearer to the Common Market that 67% of us signed up for in the 1975 referendum.
No-one has a clue what the settled will of Labour or the SNP is.
Those who complain we will still be subject to all sorts of trade rules had better get used to it because every country and economic bloc
we are now free to have trade agreements with has various environmental, safety, packaging and technical standards that exporters will need to comply with, many designed to thwart competition for domestic producers.
And those demanding the same deal as Northern Ireland should buy an atlas and see for themselves that we don’t have a land border with the EU. people and support efforts to get the best deal for Britain.
A united Britain would have given us a much stronger hand in negotiations.
But no. Their first thought was to improve their own position.
Then came the scoring of political points. Next was making Parliament – not the people – responsible for any future deal.
Remainers, independence supporters and financial forecasters have sought to delay, change or reject proposals, painting a picture of doom.
We even have former senior British politicians advising the European negotiators.
Rather than support the Prime Minister in her difficult 27 versus 1 position, individuals from all parties have tried to undermine her at every step.
Our MPs have surrendered the high ground to European politicians who must be laughing at our indecision and weakness.
