More of the same needed from Gordonians

-

Gordonians captain Tom Williams insists the mantra is an easy one for his side as they bid to regain top spot in National League 3 – don’t change a thing.

The Dons enjoyed a free weekend last Saturday as their home game against Orkney was postponed due to the high winds which affected the ferry to Aberdeen and Newton Stewart made the most of their chance to go top by winning 31-7 at Carrick.

Williams knows the pressure is on as his side head into the second half of the season.

He said: “I completely agree with what Danny Osugo said last week in that the pressure will come on us in the second half of the season. We started poorly last season but came on strong in the second half of the campaign and I’m sure there are a few sides looking to do the same.

“But the pressure will come from all the teams in this division as it’s a competitive league. We know it’s coming but we are ready for it. We can’t do anything but take each game as it comes. Our focus is on training hard and playing well.

“We want to win every game and the plan is simple, keep doing what we’re doing.”

Williams was disappointed to relinquish top spot due to having an enforced weekend off but he was not surprised to see his side’s game called off.

He is hoping for better fortune when fourth placed Murrayfield Wanderers, whose three-game winning run was halted by Hillhead Jordanhill last Friday, visit Countesswells tomorrow.

He said: “It was unfortunate that last weekend’s game was postponed but I wasn’t surprised. I was working in Shetland all week and I saw first-hand how the weather was but it was still frustrating not to play.

“We know all about Murrayfield Wanderers. We played well down at their place on the opening day and it was a great win to start the season. We are expecting another tough game as they are on a good run.”
