Rothes expect good turn

Anderson reckons big win at Lossie can be catalyst for season

- BY DAVE EDWARDS

Rothes striker Steven Anderson believes that last Saturday’s 4-0 win at Lossiemouth can kick-start the Speysiders’ season.

Anderson’s side will look to pick up another three points when they host Nairn today.

The former Wick Academy forward said: “It was a good win at Lossie. It was a real confidence booster that we needed.

“Hopefully we can now build on that encouraging performance at Grant Park as our form over these past few months hasn’t been particularly good.

“I would like to think that we could make it backto-back wins against Nairn County this weekend push on from there.

“We know that it won’t be easy as County are a good young side.

“Even when I was a Wick Academy player you always knew that you were in for a tough afternoon any time you played against Nairn.”

The 26-year-old was pleased to hit the back of the net twice in the victory over Lossiemouth.

He added: “It was nice to get back on the scoresheet at Grant Park.

“Everyone goes through a drought when the goals dry up and it happens from time to time.

“But you just have to keep believing in yourself and sooner or later you will be rewarded for your efforts.

“Nobody likes losing and this season we have lost quite a few games due to conceding last-minute and injury-time goals.

“On the occasions when we have gone in front we just couldn’t hold onto the lead.

“Understandably, the players’ heads did go down a bit but we still have a great spirit in the camp and hopefully we can pick up another win this weekend.”

Nairn County manager Ronnie Sharp is looking for great things from his new striker from Clachnacuddin Liam Shewan.

He said: “Liam scored a hat-trick in our 7-0 midweek friendly victory over Burghead Thistle. He looked good so he will definitely play in the game at Rothes this weekend.

“We have been looking for a striker, it’s now just a case of getting Liam up to speed from a fitness point of view.

“We have been playing some good football in recent weeks but we just haven’t been getting the results our play has deserved.

“Unfortunately we have one or two injuries and illnesses ahead of the game.

“Ryan MacDonald, Kenny McKenzie and Dylan Mackenzie are all injured, while wide midfielder Ewen Urquhart has been suffering from a sickness bug this week so he will have to undergo a late fitness test.

“On a positive note Adam Porritt, has served his suspension and is added to the squad.

“Like ourselves, Rothes have also been blowing a wee bit hot and cold this season but we certainly haven’t spent the money they have.”
