Lighthouse funds not from Trinity
SIR, – Mark Openshaw is incorrect in his assertion that Trinity House pay for Scottish lighthouses.
A little research would have revealed that the “light dues” are paid to the General Lighthouse Fund by vessels using all British Isles ports (including Ireland).
Scottish and Isle of Man lighthouses are administered by the Northern Lighthouse Board; those in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar by Trinity House; and Ireland (north and south) by Irish Lights.
Given that the fund pays for Irish Lights, it would presumably continue to do the same for Northern Lighthouse Board after independence.
Unless the rest of the UK decides to be bloody-minded about it.
