Solving north’ s housing problem
If recent surveys are to be believed and young Highlanders are increasingly keen to stay in – or return to – the region, the door must be left wide open to them.
A lack of affordable housing is one of the factors which means that for the moment it is, if not bolted shut, then at least only slightly ajar.
In that context, the government’s £5 million house-building project remains a welcome attempt to push it a little further in the right direction.
But so far it has proved significantly more effective in theory than in practice and should be thoroughly reviewed to find out why and fix any problems.
