Gordonians have to learn lessons quickly

-

The novelty of playing at a higher level is wearing thin as the losses continue to rack up for Gordonians.

The Aberdeen side have lost all five of their National 2 matches to date and find themselves eight points adrift at the bottom of the division.

For captain Danny Osugo and his team-mates, the season so far has been a steep learning curve.

He said: “We’re learning but not quickly enough.

“There is still time and the belief in the squad that we can go on and have a good season, but we need to act now if we are to turn our season around.

“We’ve been here before. Our first campaign in National 3 was really tough and we had a long losing run there, but we still finished comfortably in mid-table thanks to a strong second half of the season.

“It can still be done but we need to change our fortunes and quickly.”

Gordonians suffered a 29-7 loss at Kirkcaldy last week in what was their heaviest defeat in the league to date, and with third-bottom Glasgow Academicals visiting Countesswells tomorrow the importance of making home advantage count has not been lost on the club captain.

He said: “It has been tough, there’s no getting away from it. We’re playing in a really unforgiving division and it has been a struggle for us so far.

“We were well beaten last weekend by a very good side. We held on to keep the score respectable but they were a good, powerful side and we can have no complaints.

“But the other matches have all been close and it’s no exaggeration to say we could easily have won them all. Our own naivety has cost us dear but we have been competitive in all the games with the exception of last week.

“Glasgow Accies will be another tough one, but our target at the start of the season was to win our home games and we feel we’ve been at our most competitive at Countesswells.”
