Ginger all the way

Crabbie’s is traditiona­lly found in a Whisky Mac but its exotic notes of citrus, cloves and cinnamon have brought it to the attention of a new generation of mixologist­s. Here are some recipes for a new generation of Crabbie’s combinatio­ns

Crabbie’s Green Ginger Wine combines the best of British with exotic influences from around the world, such as premium fresh ginger from the Far East, orange and lemon zest, wild cowslip from Eastern Europe and fragrant Oriental cinnamon and cloves, offering a smooth taste with a touch of fire.

Lucy Cottrell, brand manager for Crabbie’s Ginger Wine, said: “Traditiona­lly Crabbie’s Green Ginger Wine was sipped or served with whisky in a Whisky Mac, but now we’re finding younger, more adventurou­s experiment­ers are using it in cocktails due to its distinctiv­e fiery flavour.”

Also in the Crabbie’s fold is Crabbie’s Mulled Ginger Wine – a blend of the finest quality British Ruby and Crabbie’s Ginger Wine with natural ginger and spices – which has morphed from a Christmas tipple into a year-round drink. Again it’s being used in cocktails due to its richness, depth of flavour and versatilit­y.

Here’s some inspiratio­n on how to use Crabbie’s Green Ginger Wine and Crabbie’s Mulled Ginger Wine in cocktails.

Ginger and Basil Collins

Serves 1

• 4 lemon wedges

• 5 basil leaves

• 50ml Crabbie’s Green Ginger Wine

• Soda water

• Crushed ice Squeeze the lemon wedges into the base of a rocks glass.

Add the basil leaves and ginger wine. Fill with crushed ice and top with soda water.

Stir and garnish with a fresh sprig of basil.

Ginger and Calvados Sour

Serves 1

• 35ml Calvados

• 35ml Crabbie’s Green Ginger Wine

• 25ml lemon juice

• 3 dashes orange bitters

• 12.5ml Gomme

• The white of half an egg

Add all of the ingredient­s to a chilled Boston shaker with ice.

Shake well then strain into a rocks glass with cubed ice.

Crabbie’s Mulled Sangria

Serves 6

• 1 bottle Crabbie’s Mulled Ginger Wine

• Juice of 1 large orange

• 1 can of soda water

Fill a large jug or pitcher with plenty of ice.

Add the ginger wine, orange juice and soda.

Stir well and serve.

Spiced Summer Collins

Serves 1

• Half a lemon

• 35ml Crabbie’s Mulled Ginger Wine

• 25ml vodka

• 20ml strawberry puree

• Soda water

Squeeze the lemon juice into the base of a tall glass.

Add cubed ice and add the ginger wine, vodka and puree.

Stir well, top up with soda water and garnish with a sprig of mint.
