19 die as ty­phoon bat­ters Ja­pan

He­li­copters, boats and thou­sands of troops were de­ployed across Ja­pan to res­cue peo­ple stranded in flooded homes as the death toll from fe­ro­cious Ty­phoon Hag­ibis climbed to at least 19 with more than a dozen miss­ing.

Some 376,000 homes were with­out elec­tric­ity, 14,000 homes lacked run­ning wa­ter, and three games in the Rugby World Cup were can­celled. Boats and he­li­copters were sent to flooded ar­eas, while res­cue crews dug through dirt else­where to get peo­ple out of homes buried by land­slides.
