Bragging rights at stake as Scots face off at club level

● Robertson and McTominay go head-to-head in famous fixture

Andy Robertson is determined to be the celebrating Scot come the end of Sunday’s Premier League game between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Liverpool defender Robertson and United midfielder Scott McTominay played for Scotland in the doubleheader against Russia and San Marino, but will be on opposite sides when their clubs meet in one of the most famed rivalries in world football.

Robertson has yet to taste victory at Old Trafford, with Liverpool’s most recent away victory in the fixture a 3-0 triumph in March 2014.

Robertson said: “I think what makes the fixture so special is that it’s historic. There have been such great battles down the years.

“They have always had top teams who have always fought against each other for everything on the pitch.

“It’s always like that. And it’s genuinely a different atmosphere when you play against them. It’s one game that we always look forward to.

“Since I’ve been a Liverpool player we’ve not managed to get a result at Old Trafford, so hopefully that changes on Sunday.

“There have also been a lot of Scottish players and managers who have contributed to both clubs right down through the years.

“We obviously have that connection and it’s good that me and Scott can sort of fly the flag down there.

“Hopefully more can come down and join us and keep that tradition going.”

Scotland skipper Robertson has been Scott McTominay

impressed with the performances of McTominay, who won his 12th national team cap in Sunday’s 6-0 victory over San Marino.

Robertson added: “There was a wee bit of banter with Scott during the Scotland duty.

“I thought Scott was fantastic for us against San Marino.

“He’s been excellent all season in a United team that has had its critics. I think he’s carried himself very well.

“I’ll be looking forward to facing him on Sunday. Obviously I hope to come out on top.”

Robertson is part of a Reds side which has stormed eight points clear at the top of the Premier League with eight straight victories.

But the 25-year-old refuses to take anything for granted against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s struggling United men, who have just two wins to their name.

He added: “I don’t think it matters what your form is like in these games.

“It doesn’t matter that we’ve won eight on the bounce and they’re struggling.

“It’s Manchester United against Liverpool. It says everything it needs to say for itself.

“It will be a one-off game and we’ll see who comes out on top.

“I have no doubt that they’ll produce a reaction after a poor performance against Newcastle.

“I’m absolutely sure that they will be firing and wanting to kick start their season.

“For them, there would be no better time to do it than against us.

“But we have our own objectives and our own aims. That’s what we’ve got to be striving for.”
