Glasgow out to blemish Fort’s record

-

Fort William will collect the National Division trophy at An Aird tomorrow – but Glasgow Mid Argyll are out to spoil the party by spoiling Fort’s perfect record.

Fort have won all 13 league games but Mid Argyll player-manager Mark Bain, whose team clinched promotion last week, said: “We’re looking forward to trying to stop them finishing with a 100 per cent record.

“They beat us 2-1 in Glasgow early in the season, a game we should have won, then edged us 3-2 in the Balliemore Cup final, so it would be good to get some revenge.”

Victor Smith and Addie Robertson have done an exceptional job as co-managers at An Aird and the team is averaging a shade under five goals a game, with Arran MacPhee leading a prolific attack.

But Mid Argyll have only conceded six league goals all season, including only one goal in their last six league outings.

Victor Smith said: “We’ll be at full strength to receive the trophy and we realise Mid Argyll are a big, physical team who will be difficult to break down.

“They deserve to go up to the Premiership with us. Their defensive record is unique – but we’ll be doing our best to get the ball past keeper Robert Stubbings.”

The final National Division game of the season will be Fort’s first fixture since winning the Balliemore trophy on August 24, when Padraig MacNeil’s two late goals swung it their way.

Smith said: “It’s been a long wait and we cut the training down to one night a week. Lachie Shaw is off to university – but he has committed to commuting to play for us.”
