Scots finish groups with a flourish

Scotland rounded off their World Mixed Curling Championsh­ip round robin stage in style last night as they beat Ireland to top Group D with a 100% record.

The Scottish team of skip Luke Carson, vicecaptai­n Kirstin Bousie, Mark Taylor and Katie McMillan came from 2-0 down after two ends to beat Ireland 7-3 to finish top of their group and maintain their momentum ahead of the knockout phase which begins today.

Ireland also progress to the last 16 but had to settle for second place in the group after failing to beat the hosts at Curl Aberdeen.

Slovakia claimed the third and final spot in the knockout stages available from Group

A despite not being on the ice in the morning session with Canada’s 7-2 win against Estonia ensuring Slovakia joined the Canadians and Germany in the last 16.

Norway’s 9-1 win against Wales ensured they joined Denmark in qualifying from Group B with Poland claiming the third play-off place thanks to the Danes’ 6-1 win against the Czech Republic.

The qualifiers from Group C were all determined on Wednesday with Spain, Hungary, the United States qualifying along with Sweden, who progressed as the best fourth placed team in the tournament.

Russia, Switzerlan­d and Korea progress from Group E.

Sweden as 16th seeded team will play first seed, Canada, in today’s opening play-off round.

Play begins at 9am with the second session scheduled for 1pm. The winners meet in the quarter-finals at 7pm.
