Youngster getting chance on day trophy is presented

-

Kingussie will receive the Mowi Premiership trophy tomorrow at their final fixture against Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruiach.

But they will do so without experienced players Fraser Munro and James Hutchison, who have been excused duty because of a wedding.

Manager John Gibson takes the opportunity to call 15-year-old Cammy Leiper into his squad.

Gibson said: “Cammy played a full game against Beauly in the cup earlier in the season and he’s a bright prospect at wing back or midfield. He’ll start on the bench, as will Owen Reid, a clean hitter of the ball who has shown up well in the second team.”

Ryan MacWilliam will come in for Fraser Munro and while James Falconer is back from holiday, teenager Liam Borthwick will keep his place in the forward line.

Gibson added: “Our lads richly deserve to receive their championship medals. Kyles will be difficult, but ideally we’d like to finish with a win and show our style.

“We knew after six or seven games of the season that we’d stepped up a level and could be challenging, although we didn’t shout about it.

“In the closing months of the campaign, when the pressure was on, we were excellent and we didn’t need to rely on favours from Newtonmore and Oban slipping up. We did it on our own merit and we’ll be celebrating as we take home the trophy.”

Classy Kings, champions for the first time in 10 years, have won eight and drawn one of their last nine games.

Kyles’ Colin MacDonald and Conor Kennedy, missing in last weekend’s 4-0 win over Caberfeidh, are available and playerboss Dunky Kerr expects to be at full strength.

Athletic, who have three games remaining, all at home, can still finish runners-up to Kingussie, so they have something to play for.
