Fort skipper left frustrated by cup replay injury and result

-

Fort William midfielder and captain Robert Nevison was hugely disappointed to have to come off at half-time with a foot injury in Saturday’s 5-0 Scottish Cup defeat to Albion Rovers at Claggan Park. The 27-year-old, based in Inverness, said: “It was disappointing to go down so heavily at home in the replay

after coming so close to knocking Albion Rovers out of the cup down there, but of course they are a League 2 side. “Unfortunately, in that first 45 minutes, I picked up an injury to my left foot and was unable to go back out for the second half which was frustrating. “It was a physical game and I was playing in the hole, doing all the dirty work, but I honestly don’t mind that role. To be honest, it’s more my game.”

The Lochaber outfit held

Rovers in the first leg at Cliftonhill, with Gabriel Hastings scoring a late equaliser to book the Fort a hard-earned replay. Nevison admitted he was pleasantly surprised by the cup fever which engulfed Fort William last week.

The club had already come through an emphatic 5-0 win over Lowland League side Vale of Leithen to earn the tie against League 2 Rovers. Nevison said: “We had close to 700 fans at our cup game against Albion Rovers on Saturday. That’s unheard of at Claggan Park but it’s great to see. The supporters are brilliant. They just want to see a successful team.

“There was that big change in the summer. “We are all getting on well together and I’ve no doubt we will get even better yet.”

The Fort skipper went on to pay tribute to last Saturday’s man of the match, goalkeeper Mateusz Kulbacki. He said: “Matty is a great keeper, really confident and a great shot-stopper. “He was happy to bide his time after Martin MacKinnon, a local Fort William boy, arrived on loan from Caley Thistle.

Now that Martin’s on the injury-list he has grabbed his chance with both hands.” Fort are back in Highland League action at home to Huntly on Saturday, where they will look for their second league win of the season.
