Zachary’s wish granted as he spies Nessie on the loch
Monster hunt: Charity creates magical experience for poorly five-year-old
A seriously ill boy who is “obsessed with Scotland” had his greatest wish granted yesterday after finding the Loch Ness monster.
Five-year-old Zachary White, from Bracknell, Berkshire, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in February.
He has spent much of this year in hospital, enduring surgery, chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.
As the youngster has bravely battled through the gruelling treatments, his one abiding desire has
“Seeing his sheer joy and excitement was infectious”
been to visit Scotland and find the famous Nessie.
And thanks to the Rays of Sunshine children’s charity, Zachary’s wish came true yesterday as he enjoyed a trip north with mum and dad, Katie and Mark.
The charity enlisted the help of Loch Ness Cruises to organise a ‘Nessie hunt’ for Zachary, who spent time out on the loch with binoculars, compass, magnifying glass and a handheld torch.
After an hour out on the water looking for a sign of the monster, Zachary spotted something way off in the distance.
Closer inspection revealed that his greatest wish had come true, as the Loch Ness monster showed herself for just a brief moment.
An ecstatic Zachary said afterwards: “I spotted Nessie. I can’t believe I got to see the Loch Ness monster!
“Not many people get to see her and I got to see her. She was green and scaly, a bit like a dinosaur, but a friendly monster.”
His parents added: “Today has been amazing.
“To be able to come away as a family and create such precious memories with Zachary after so long in hospital has been incredible.
“Seeing him back to his old self, so excited and smiling, has been fantastic.”
Rays of Sunshine CEO Jane Sharpe said: “I am so thrilled that we were able to make Zachary’s wish come true and in such a spectacular style. This wish clearly came from Zachary’s own imagination and inspired us to go above and beyond to create the most magical experience possible.Seeing his sheer joy and excitement when he spotted Nessie was completely infectious.”
Rays of Sunshine provides support for seriously ill children across the UK, including granting wishes.
Zachary’s was the 7,000th dream to be brought to life since the charity was founded in 2003.
