Man­hunt be­gins over late-af­ter­noon as­sault

Po­lice launched a man­hunt in a north-east town last night af­ter a man was as­saulted.

Of­fi­cers swooped on King Street in Peter­head in large num­bers af­ter re­ports of the at­tack were re­ceived at around 4.30pm. Sev­eral po­lice ve­hi­cles at­tended the scene, close to the junc­tion with Ugie Street, along with am­bu­lance crews.

By­s­tanders re­ported see­ing of­fi­cers search­ing their gar­dens, with dog units called in to as­sist.

An area of the road was cor­doned off.

A spokes­woman said the vic­tim had not been in­jured se­ri­ously enough to be taken to hospi­tal.

She added that of­fi­cers were un­sure whether one or two men were be­hind the at­tack.

The spokes­woman said:

“A man was as­saulted and did re­quire med­i­cal as­sis­tance, but did not go to hospi­tal.

“It is not yet clear if we are look­ing for one man or two in con­nec­tion.”

Last night po­lice said in­quiries were on­go­ing.
