Clubs regret World Cup delays

- BY JACK NIXON

Caledonia area clubs who agreed to suspend games in the current season while much of the World Cup was played appear to be having regrets.

Ellon, who play in Caley Division 1 – Caledonia’s top flight – have only played two league games since the season began on August 31.

Ellon head coach Craig Parslow said: “It’s farcical, especially at a time when we have enjoyed some of the most marvellous autumn weather in years.

“The danger is that we will lose the interest of the players.”

And Russell Arthur, director of rugby at Aberdeen Wanderers, said: “The break means we have been unable to build up momentum.

“There’s also a social issue to be considered, particularly in our leagues where it’s important to retain our sense of community involvement.

“Hopefully, the good weather we have had will still be there when we get back to playing on November 9, although that’s probably expecting too much.”

Barny Henderson, the Aberdeenshire head coach said: “We have actually welcomed the break, giving us time to get injured players back to full fitness.

“By the time the season re-commences these issues will have been resolved, although given normal circumstances, I would rather be seeing some action.”

Bob Richmond, the area’s SRU representative, said: “The consensus among clubs was the World Cup...should be seen on TV by club players, which given games have been played in the mornings, combined with the fact of us traditionally having good weather in September and October, made for a strange decision.”
