Young farm­ers reap com­pe­ti­tion awards

Young farm­ers gath­ered at Huntly Mart for the Scot­tish As­so­ci­a­tion of Young Farm­ers’ Clubs north re­gion com­pe­ti­tions day.

Broth­ers Wil­liam and David Moir, of Home Farm, Cair­ness, came out top in both the se­nior beef cat­tle dress­ing and se­nior prime lamb dress­ing con­tests.

The duo, who are mem­bers of Strichen JAC, scored 97 points out a pos­si­ble 100 in the cat­tle sec­tion and 93 out of 100 in the lamb con­test. Cat­tle judge Deb­bie Watt, from New Deer, awarded first place in the ju­nior sec­tion to Finn Christie and Cameron Hunter from Gar­i­och Young Farm­ers’ Club (YFC) with a score of 80 points.

Lamb judges Ross and Kirsten Williams, Up­per Tul­lochbeg, Huntly, also gave the top ju­nior award to the Gar­i­och duo who scored 79 points.

The day also fea­tured an agri skills com­pe­ti­tion where teams were tasked with com­plet­ing a range of ac­tiv­i­ties in­clud­ing se­cur­ing a load, re­vers­ing a trailer, and com­plet­ing a health and safety quiz. The top prize went to a team from Gar­i­och YFC com­pris­ing Neil Watt, Cal­lum Simp­son and Cameron Hunter.
