Cinema opening date put back to new year

The Press and Journal (Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire) - - NEWS - BY REBEKAH MCVEY

The opening date of Peterhead’s new fivescreen cinema has been pushed back until early next year.

Operators Arc Cinema had previously indicated they hoped to open the venue, on the site of the former Gala bingo hall, before Christmas.

But due to “unforeseen delays” with the building works, it will now not welcome its first viewers until early 2020.

Brian Gilligan, from Arc Cinema said: “Since we announced the opening we have been delighted with the positive and warm response we have had.

“Clearlythe townislooking forwardtoits newcinema”

“Clearly Peterhead is looking forward to getting its new cinema and this makes it particularly difficult to have to explain that due to unforeseen delays with the building programme we will now not be able to open until early in 2020.”

With the new cinema, the volunteer-run Peterhead Cinema at the leisure centre will cease operating.

Its last film will be shown on December 21.

The development of the cinema has been helped by Aberdeenshire Council with a £200,000 injection from their property investment fund.
