ow that Bonfire Night is out of the way, I’m going early with my letter to Father Christmas to sort out my dream garage.
Once upon a time, this consisted of at least half a dozen cars. A Porsche 911 to scratch the sportscar itch, a Lamborghini Diablo GT for the supercar one.
Then there’d be the Range Rover for luxury, a Roll-Royce Phantom for extra luxury, and a Land Rover Defender as their antidote.
Plus a Volkswagen Golf GTI to satisfy my eternal hot-hatch craving.
Other cars would be added and removed to suit my whims but on the whole these cars formed my staple stable for at least a decade.
Today I need simplicity in my life wherever I can get it and, as my life evolves, so does my ideal garage. Today’s list has shrunk to just two and, for the first time ever, features an electric car.
But which one? And how refreshing to have a choice in this marketplace now.
So, Tesla launched its answer to BMW’s 3-Series this year and called it the Model 3. It combines space, practicality and power in impressive measures. But I also really admire BMW’s own electric offerings – the i8 sportscar, and the cityfocused i3.
Then there’s the budgetfriendly Renault Zoe, and at the other end of the size scale, there’s the Jaguar I-Pace. Plus there are interesting machines from Hyundai, Nissan, the VW/Audi group and even MG with its first all-electric car, the ZS EV, that was launched recently.
Maybe Santa could ask the elves to do a few rounds of rock, paper, scissor to decide for me?
And which car should go alongside it, dear Papa Noel? The best car I’ve driven this year is the Ferrari 812 Superfast. It does what it says on the tin but it is far from ideal for my growing children. And dog the size of a lion.
My demands mean that
I’m best suited to an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). And if I should add “electric” to that formula to simplify things further, then I’d end up needing just one car.
And that car might just be a Ford that remains hidden from the world for the next 12 days. But on November 18, all eyes will be on the Mustang-inspired
SUV electric car that carries the codename “Mach-E”.
It might just be the perfect machine for me.
And Father Christmas will have plenty of time to wrap it.
See Vicki on Fifth Gear, at 9pm, the Quest channel, for the remaining four weeks.
