Young Dons primed to face Terriers

-

Aberdeen reserves boss Paul Sheerin hopes to have Dean Campbell and Bruce Anderson available for the young Dons’ trip to Huddersfield on Saturday.

Sheerin’s side have competed in a new cross-border reserves competition this season, involving the Terriers, Brentford, Celtic, Rangers and Hibernian.

They beat Huddersfield 3-0 at Brechin in September, with goals from Anderson, Ethan Ross and Chris Antoniazzi seeing off Dean Whitehead’s side.

Anderson and Campbell both featured in the 5-0 Aberdeenshire Shield win over a young Cove Rangers side on Tuesday night, with striker Anderson on the scoresheet twice.

That side also included Ross, who grabbed the fifth goal, and Stephen Gleeson, who is returning from a knee injury.

It is the Dons’ turn to travel this weekend, with the game taking place at Huddersfield’s training ground at PPG Canalside.

Having Campbell and Anderson, who already have decent first-team experience, would make Sheerin’s selection easier.

He said: “We saw their frustration at the end of the 3-0 game at Brechin.

“We were excellent on the day but already it seems in the competition, when teams are travelling they seem to be a little bit lighter.

“We may have the same issues, we may not. It’s changed to a Saturday now so hopefully we’ll get certain ones that are on the fringes, possibly Dean and possibly Bruce, that certainly add to us.

“Fingers crossed we’ll manage to get them around the team as they’re of great benefit to us. We know it’ll be tough and we know they’ll want to put us back in our place.”

In their other game against English opposition, the Dons were beaten 3-1 at home by Brentford’s B side last month.
