Morrice: Fortune favoured the bold at last

Gordonians head coach Ryan Morrice knows his side may have benefited from some good fortune in gaining their second win of the season but is happy to take it as he believes the National 3 champions are overdue some luck in National 2.

The Dons picked up their second win of the season as they beat Falkirk 20-19 in a dramatic encounter at Countesswells last week.

A late kick from the visitors was deemed not to have crossed between the posts and the win for the home side ensured they moved off the bottom of the table.

Morrice said: “The boys realise how tough this league is to play in, so psychologically it is pleasing for everyone to look at the league table and see we’re off the bottom.

“I thought the ball was over the top of the post. One linesman had his flag up before the ball was kicked but ultimately it is down to the referee to decide and the decision went our way. We have had no luck at all this season so we’ll take it.

“The guys were actually pretty flat on Saturday. We never really got going and it was one of those days where we made life a lot harder for ourselves than it needed to be. The players know they didn’t perform well but what we did do is hang in there and fought for everything.”

Having won their last two home matches Gordonians will attempt to pick up their first points on the road at Stewart’s Melville tomorrow.

Morrice believes showing the same attitude and improving the performance from last weekend can give his side a chance.

He said: “Stewart’s Melville will be well drilled and well organised. They are one of those teams who on their day are up there alongside the leading teams in this league.

“We know we are going to have to go there and show the same fight we showed last week, build on our set-piece play and perform.

“It’s crucial we retain control of the ball and keep calm when the pressure comes.”
