Gordonians facing season-defining match

Gordonians face a makeor-break weekend in their bid to stay in National 2.

That’s the view of head coach Ryan Morrice as his side travel to Glasgow Accies tomorrow.

The National 2 champions are second bottom of the division, six points behind fourthbottom Accies after 16 games.

With bottom club Whitecraigs and thirdbottom Falkirk having played two games less than the Dons, Morrice is not shying away from the importance of tomorrow’s match.

To call it a big game is underplaying it but Morrice and his players can take solace from the fact they ran out resounding 42-7 winners against Glasgow when the sides last met at Countesswells in October.

Morrice said: “It’s a huge game, there’s no hiding from that. I’d go as far as to say this is a season defining game for us and is a match which will go a long way to determining where we end up in this league come the end of the season.

“We won comprehensively up here but Glasgow Accies will be a very different proposition at their own place. They will have one or two involved who didn’t make the trip up here but we feel we are ready for the game. The statistics hardly make for pleasant reading for any Gordonians fan making the trip to New Anniesland.”

The Aberdeen side has lost all eight matches on the road but Morrice knows this weekend is as good a time as any to end the miserable run of form.

He said: “It is well known our away form hasn’t been great this season but if there was a game to try to turn that around then it is this weekend. You can use any cliché you want but this is a cup final game.

“We are quickly running out of chances to stay in this league and we have to start taking the opportunities left as they come.”

Gordonians return to action for the first time since February 1 when they lost 52-12 at Peebles and Morrice hopes the break has given his side a chance to regroup.
