Gordonians coach staying positive after crushing loss

Gordonians’ hopes of avoiding relegation from National League 2 look slim after they were beaten 26-13 by fellow-strugglers Glasgow Accies at New Anniesland.

With only five games to play the case for survival is hard to make, although head coach Ryan Morrice insists they can stay up. He said: “Three of our games are at home, and one of the away games is against Falkirk who are just two points above us, albeit having played three games fewer than us.

“If they are not winning, as is the case, we’re in with a shout.”

Morrice did, however, express his disappointment in his side’s failure to contest the second half of the game against Accies.

He said: “We played exceptionally well in the first half, having gone 10-0 up, only to be pegged back to trail 14-13 at the break. But we just didn’t turn up in the second half.

“Granted the conditions were atrocious but they were the same for both sides. Our error count was horrendous. We kept giving them the ball, enabling them to score four tries, earning them a precious try bonus point.”

It all started so well for the Countesswells side, who took the lead through a wellworked try touched down by prop Finlay Lennox and converted by centre Graeme Crawford, who added a penalty to give the band of travelling fans hope of a rare away win.

It was not to be as Accies found their feet, scoring two converted tries, while Crawford kicked another penalty to take the Aberdeen side to within a point of the home total.

The second half was a disaster for the visitors who failed to cope with the elements, and the verve of the opposition, conceding two further tries to lose out 26-13.

Gordonians have a week off before taking on Hamilton Bulls in Aberdeen, followed by a trip to Falkirk.
