Matheson magic delivers PB on way to winning bronze

Aberdeen AAC’s Rebecca Matheson set a personal best 200m time of 23.33sec on her way to collecting bronze in the British Universiti­es and Colleges indoor championsh­ips at Sheffield.

The Robert Gordon University sports science student achieved the time in her semi-final before running the second best time of her career, 24:43, when placing third in the final behind Northumbri­a’s Jazmine Moss, 23:88, and Loughborou­gh’s Hannah Brier, 23:94.

Inverness athlete Andrew McFarlane was pipped on countback for bronze in the men’s pole vault when clearing 4.70m, a height shared with Sheffield’s George Heppinstal­l.

Lister won with 5m. There was also a near-miss for Aberdeen AAC’s Carmen Neat, the Loughborou­gh student finishing fourth in the women’s high jump with 1.72. Birmingham’s Laura Zialor won with 1.81.

Jason Kelly won the Fetteresso Forest marathon for the third time, in a time of 2hr 52min 41sec.

The Metro Aberdeen runner had finished second in each of the previous two years but made no mistake on this occasion.

Anthony Herbert (Deveron Harriers) was runner-up in 3:04:59, with Duncan Chedburn third in 3:06:19.

There were wins for Kevin Stephen (Garioch Road Runners) in the 4049 age division, 3:28:10, and Iain Campbell (St Cyrus Solos), 3:39:10 in the 50-59 group.

Carnethy’s Aisling Allum set a record time of 3:42:29 when winning the women’s race in which Sarah Milne (Metro Aberdeen) was second in 3:43:44 and Jo Wallace (Edinburgh Running Network) was third in 4:00:01.

Jenni Rees-Jenkins (Insch Trail Running Club) was first in the 40-49 age group in 4:06:07. Louise Kelly (Stonehaven Running Club) was first 50-59 in 4:05:29.
