Caley Thistle: Attacker believes cup joy can lift team in promotion push
Miles Storey wants to make winning a habit after booking Caley Thistle a place in the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup final.
His goal in the second half of Sunday’s 2-1 win against Rangers Colts put Inverness into their fifth final in this competition, which they last won in 2018.
The two occasions they have lifted the trophy – 2003-04 and two years ago – they have enjoyed strong finishes to the season. They won promotion to the top flight for the first time in 2004 and a late-season tear in 2018 saw them narrowly miss out on making the play-offs.
It would be Storey’s first chance to secure a winner’s medal, too, with victory potentially giving the Caley Jags an important lift ahead of the season’s run-in.
Storey said: “Winning a trophy is winning a trophy – we want to make a habit of winning.
“We won ugly against
Livingston last week and we won even more ugly against Rangers.We’ll take that over passing a team off the pitch. We need to win more ways than one.
“I was at Aberdeen for a couple of finals and played about three minutes in one.
“It’ll be good to hopefully get out there. I watched the Partick-Raith game and Raith are a good side. It won’t be an easy game, just like Sunday wasn’t.”
Sunday’s goal was Storey’s fourth of the season, coming in 28 appearances. It is a tally which the former Aberdeen and Partick Thistle man is keen to build on in the weeks ahead.
He added: “I’m just trying to be positive, run at people and use my strengths. But I’ll take the goal. I’ve been getting into some areas and not quite finishing them but take that.
“I know I’m playing wide but even playing there, I create some things and I just need to get in some better scoring areas. I need to find myself between the goal posts and get on the end of things a bit more.
“It was hard to run (on Sunday) – your bones were freezing and you were drenched through.
“The kitman gave me new shorts and shirt – and then I go and fall in the grit. It made everything difficult, being so heavy.”
Meanwhile, Caley Thistle have appealed the red card shown to striker James Keatings in Sunday’s semi-final.
The attacker was sent off by referee Greg Aitken after being shown a second yellow card for simulation despite appearing to have been fouled as he ran into the box.
If successful in their appeal, Keatings will be free to face Raith Rovers in the final on Saturday March 28 at a venue still to be determined.
