Where do ‘pseudo Scots’ fit in?

-

SIR, – As a regular reader of P&J Letters, I have noted that some contributors have identified themselves as “true Scots” – often in the context of Scottish separation from the UK. Both pro-independence and against in roughly equal measure, I hasten to add.

I must confess to being somewhat at a loss to understand their intention. Leaving aside the obvious – born in Scotland of Scottish descent – I strongly suspect there are other layers of meaning.

If there is a suggestion that “true Scots” are a breed apart then it follows that lesser Scots, or pseudo Scots, must also be present.

Not being Scottish at all, albeit a long-time resident, it leaves me wondering where it is that I fit in. A subspecies perhaps?

Is there anyone out there who can offer some advice on how to distinguish between these disparate members of the population of Scotland?
