Rees going all out for victory in front of Glasgow crowd

-

Banchory Stonehaven’s Alisha Rees hopes to break the Scottish indoor 60m record for the third time this year when she competes this weekend’s British championships at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

The Loughborough student recorded 7:32 at Sheffield last weekend finishing second in the

British Universities and Colleges championships but is aiming for better on home soil.

She said: “I hope to run faster and I’m planning not to finish second. It’ll be good running in front of a home crowd. Hopefully I can run sub 7:30.”

Aberdeen AC’s 400m specialist Zoey Clark has decided not to compete. The Great Britain world championship 4x400m relay medallist, who spent the bulk of January training in South Africa, missed the Scottish championships because of a foot and ankle niggle.

She is now back in training but has decided to concentrate on preparing for the summer season when she hopes to secure a place on the Great Britain team for the Tokyo Olympic Games. She said: “I’ve decided to pull out because

I haven’t been able to do any indoor competitions beforehand, so there’s really no point. I’m back running again, so I’m going to use the fact that I’m not doing any indoor races to focus on getting a good block of training done.”

Her clubmate Rebecca Matheson will be running in the 200m with the aim of building on her fine form so far this year. The Robert Gordon University student picked up silver in the Scottish championships and bronze in the British Universities and Colleges championships, achieving personal best performances in both competitions.

Ullapool’s Stephen MacKenzie aims to do well in the long jump while Stephen Mackay (Inverness Harriers) and Michael Ferguson (Aberdeen AAC) bid for success in the 1,500m.
