Music: Region’ s artists band together for Facebook stream of event

- BY JAMES WYLLIE

Musicians from across the north-east will pick up their instruments and perform to households across the world this weekend.

With live music events cancelled for the foreseeable future, scores of Aberdeenshire artists have banded together to put on a show for those stuck at home.

Lockdown Live will be streamed over Facebook this afternoon and again on Sunday, with country, musical theatre, folk and jazz singers all on the line-up.

Inspired by a similar project in Spain, it was set up by Veronica Largue, who has been left “lost for words” at the interest her north-east equivalent has already received.

The mum of four said: “We can’t go to concerts or watch live music, so we want this to be the next best thing.

“This will let us get people together and watch some local acts playing live, and hopefully make them feel like they’re at a gig.

“I imagine most people will have a drink in hand as they watch – and maybe they’ll even have a dance about their living room or kitchen.

“This will be a great distraction from everything people are going through just now.”

Mrs Largue initially planned for the event to just focus on her community, but expanded the scheme after being inundated by messages from people living further afield.

“When we started the page on Sunday night we had 91 members,” she said.

“When I woke up the next morning we had 630 – and three days later we reached 10,000.

“I’m amazed, as I didn’t expect it to grow like this.”

The first night of entertainment will be hosted by musician Marie Western from 3pm today, while the second day will begin at 1.30pm tomorrow.

Mrs Largue is considering expanding the event to additional weekends down the line if it is well-received.

She said: “It’s given people something to look forward to.

“This is going to help musicians too, to get their music out there and be heard.”
