Wage saving cuts both ways

-

There has been much concern among players about the prospect of taking wage cuts to help their clubs during the shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hopefully the Chancellor’s attempts to help ensure players – as with the rest of the workers in the country affected by this – are paid up to 80%, or £2,500 per month, will help those who need it.

For players at the top level I think most should be able to bite the bullet and help their club’s respective cause during the break from football.

I’ve seen players paid bonuses for scoring a goal, assisting a goal or keeping a clean sheet. Extra money for basically doing your job. I’m of the belief if you can take all those little extras for doing what is expected of you then surely you can take on some hardship for the greater good during these trying times.

We all have bills to pay and this is not easy for any of us but as a former player I know this time of year was when the nice summer holiday was being paid for. Clearly, it’s highly unlikely to be happening this summer but the money saved may just help you through the uncertainty.

The guys I feel for are those whose contracts are due to expire this summer and they are planning on moving on.

I don’t see too many new deals being offered before pre-season starts and that is highly unlikely to be happening any time soon.
